Associate Professor Seth Cheetham has been appointed Director of the National Biologics Facility, the national capability that helps researchers turn a laboratory discovery into material suitable for preclinical and early clinical work.

The gap the facility fills is a practical one. A promising molecule is of little use to patients until someone can make it reliably, at the right quality and in the right quantity, and most academic groups have no way to do that on their own.

For the Hub, the appointment strengthens the link between vaccine design at AIBN and the manufacture of material for trials, which is the step where many good ideas otherwise stall.
